Do you usually plan to spend your weekend active, but often have no idea what to do? Tibidabo is one of the most interesting places for a one day trip outside Barcelona.

The road to the peak with many fabulous views, beautiful flora, and fresh air – what more can we ask for? On the dessert, you will spend long hours admiring the impressive view of the whole city from the summit.

Part one: plan your trip

Tibidabo is a mountain situated just behind Barcelona, 512 meters above a sea level. It’s a part of the Serra de Collserola mountain range.

There are many ways of transport to Tibidabo. You can choose a subway, bus or tram. What’s more, Tibidabo is famous because of its historical cableways – Funicular del Tibidabo and Tramvia Blau. Both were opened in 1901.

To be honest, I recommend giving up all these ideas and hike to the peak! This kind of trip would be a fantastic adventure. There are a few different roads to choose, and each of them offers unique experiences.

Beautiful views of Barcelona and the Mediterranean Sea from different heights, the tropical plants, parks and southern architecture – these are only a few reasons why it’s worth to spend your free time outside and visit Tibidabo.

I’m sure that your walk to the peak will be full of impressions. However, when you finally reach the peak you notice even more beautiful landscapes!

The Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor is a Catholic church located at the top of Tibidabo. This building will delight you because of its incredible size and Neo-Gothic architectural style. It would be a pleasure to visit this place for everyone who admires the architecture, history, and tradition. As you can read in some guidebooks, the building was modelled on the Paris SacréCœur (read more about the Sacré-Cœur basilica here).

Don’t forget to go to the wide stairs at the monument. The landscapes which you can admire from this area are magnificent, particularly during the sunset. The atmosphere created by orange rays of the sun gives an opportunity to take part in a unique theatre of colours and shades.

Tibidabo Amusement Park was opened in 1889. Nowadays it’s one of the oldest theme parks in the world. The most popular attraction of this park is the big wheel which gives you a chance to see a panoramic view of Barcelona. Big red plane or a gold carousel would be interesting for families with children. It isn’t far-fetched to say that the Tibidabo Amusement Park is quite old-fashioned, so don’t expect something very impressive or modern. However, the atmosphere and amazing views will guarantee a lot of impressions.

In the midst of wild nature

Take the hike to the top – it’s worth to do it! However, it looks different when it comes to the way back. I recommend you to choose a city transport, especially when you plan to go back to the city around the sunset. The area near Tibidabo is rather rustical, what means that you can meet on your way wild animals. Our meeting with a boar turned out to be safe, fortunately, but it’s worth to keep this in mind and try to be careful. 🙂
